Until 2006 the Sphereland idea persisted, holding out thought that our universe might be like a 4-ball with a 3D surface that we know as ‘space’. Einstein’s theory of relativity does not actually rule that out, but the Sphereland idea was put to rest in 2006 by the Nobel prize winning work led by John C. Mather and George F. Smoot. This work gives the Sphereland idea new life by shifting thought to the interior of the sphere.
